Curious about Urban Sketching? Not sure how to start? Join Richard Scruggs, January 2024’s Featured Artist and dedicated sketcher, for a two-day workshop jump starting your sketching journey. Richard will equip you with the skills and techniques to tell your personal story about the world you inhabit through sketching. This workshop embraces accuracy but doesn’t tie you down to perfection, allowing you to convey the vibrant life of people and places you experience.
This class is designed for all skill levels, Richard will guide you through his process, which applies seamlessly to various mediums like pen and ink, watercolor, gouache, markers, graphite, tablets, or a simple ballpoint pen.
About the Instructor
Richard has worked in watercolor for more than twelve years, earning multiple awards at Galveston Art League and Watercolor Art Society–Houston exhibitions. In 2018, he discovered urban sketching—drawing daily life on location—and his sketchbook has traveled with him ever since, on both business trips and personal adventures around the world.
In January 2024, he was the Galveston Art League’s Featured Artist, exhibiting sixteen urban sketches from around Galveston. As an instructor, Richard’s goal is to equip students with practical, approachable tools for composition and visual storytelling, with close attention to people, perspective, and place—helping them build confidence and develop their own sketching voice.

Student Cancellation Policy
All fees must be paid in full before your registration is complete. Fees are non-refundable unless the workshop is cancelled by the Galveston Art League (GAL). If GAL cancels for any reason, you have the option of applying fees to another workshop or receiving a full refund. If you must cancel and you notify GAL at least seven (7) days prior to the workshop, you will receive a credit voucher for the full amount of your payment that can be applied to another GAL workshop within 12 months. If you do not attend or if cancellation is received less than seven (7) days prior to workshop, fees will not be refunded.
