Event Type

Ever wanted to work with gourds? This class is designed to give you the skills that you will need to clean and prepare gourds to craft. You will also learn safety tips when working with gourds. Most importantly, participants will paint a gourd to look like a penguin. Time should allow everyone to leave with a finished penguin.

Eleanore, a Texas City native, has been working with gourds for 20 years. She has taught gourd workshops for several years at the Texas Gourd Festival and participated in workshops at the Texas and Arizona Gourd Festivals for over 15 years.

Creating characters for all seasons is Eleanore’s favorite gourd passion, but she also enjoys carving gourds and putting scenes inside of them. She will have been married 60 years in September to her college sweetheart. She is the proud mother of three and grandmother of eight grandchildren.

Supplies

Most supplies for the penguin are included in the cost of the workshop; Eleanore will have gourds of various shapes, acrylic paint, and some decorating accessories. Participants are asked to bring the following if you have them: (Eleanore will have extras if you don’t have them).

  • Paint brushes: sizes 1/4”, 5/8”, and 1”
  • Pencil
  • Heat gun or hair dryer to speed up drying the paint
  • Apron, if desired
  • Mask to protect from gourd dust if gourds are cut open
