Galveston Art League features award-winning photographer Pat Jakobi

Photographer Pat Jakobi, who has had a lifelong love of art and nature, will be this month’s Featured Artist at the Galveston Art League Gallery, 2117A Postoffice St. in Galveston. Jakobi shoots with a digital Pentax camera, and with few exceptions, limits her photo manipulation to processes that are historically associated with film photography: cropping, light and color adjustment, leveling, and shadowing. Digital photography also allows conversion of color shots to black-and-white, something she especially likes to do with architecture images. 

Jakobi grew up in central Los Angeles and after her marriage lived in several Midwestern states. She came to Galveston in 1987 to earn a degree in history of American health policy at UTMB’s Institute for the Medical Humanities and has since made the island her full-time home. After graduation from the institute, she worked at UTMB’s Center for Aging and the Department of Community Outreach (now Office of Health Policy and Legislative Affairs). 

Jakobi and her husband, George, ran The Good Tern, a nature store and art gallery, from 2002 to 2006. She recently wrote Early Galveston Artists and Photographers: Recovering a Legacy, a book published by History Press. Jakobi serves on Galveston’s Cultural Arts Commission and is a busy volunteer for Galveston Art League, serving as its vice president.
