About the Artist

Karen Calhoun’s work has been called “Photography in Oils”. Primarily a Realist, Karen occasionally delves into Surrealism. Karen enjoys drawing her subject matter from nature; including pets, interesting architecture, and reflections of light on glass. Currently Calhoun exhibits regularly at Affaire d’art, Galveston Art League, and Upper Bay Gallery. She has displayed her art in invited shows around the region. She has been published in Southwest Art and American Art Collector. Calhoun has several years’ experience judging shows, including the Texas City Art Festival, the TX City Art Festival Children’s Division, the College of the Mainland 55+ show, and the Student Art Show at the College of the Mainland, along with others. Karen has won awards in National Society of Artists, Galveston Art League, and Texas City Art Festival juried shows. Educational background includes three Bachelors’ degrees – Studio Art, Art in Architecture, and Art History, all from the University of Pittsburgh. Karen knew from age 5 that she wanted to be an artist. She also enjoys drawing, acrylics, and alcohol inks.

A native Pennsylvanian, Calhoun been a Texan for a decade and a half, along with her husband, the Doc. She has a son and daughter-in-law, and a beautiful baby granddaughter. Her three cats are not only her fur babies, but the subjects of some of her paintings!
